Goofy Celebrates 92 Years
Goofy, the iconic Disney character we all know and love, turns 92 today.
He debuted in the cartoon short, Mickey’s Revue, on May 25, 1932, however he wasn’t known as Goofy back then. In Mickey’s Revue, his name was Dippy Dawg, once and for all confirming, he is a dog! Goofy didn’t become known as Goofy until the 1934 cartoon Orphan’s Benefit. That cartoon also debuted another icon, Donald Duck!

A Little Goofy History
Believe-it-or-not, Goofy was conceived as a one-shot character, however he became so popular he quickly became a recurring character in Disney short films. He was known for regularly singing a blissful rendition of his trademark song “The World Owes Me a Living“.
The song originated from Disney’s 1934 Silly Symphonies cartoon, The Grasshopper and the Ants, based on Aesop’s fable of the same name.
Animator Art Babbit developed and refined Goofy’s character in those early years. The loveable dog eventually got his own film series, starting with Goofy and Wilbur in 1939.
In the 1940’s, Goofy cartoons took a slight turn and featured him participating in various sports at a posh narrator’s command.
In the 1950’s, Goofy cartoons featured him as an everyman father. That series would eventually inspire the series Goof Troop, some 40 years later in 1992. In that series, Goofy became a single parent to Max! A few years later in 1995, Goofy became one of the first of Disney’s classic characters to star in his own feature-length film, A Goofy Movie.
