Brand New Day Climbs To $360 Million And Takes The All-Time Opening Weekend Record From Endgame

Spider-Man: Brand New Day did close the gap. Monday’s final numbers put the film at $360 million domestically for its opening weekend, passing Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million and making it the biggest three-day debut in box office history. Sony had projected $355 million on Sunday, which left the record intact by roughly $2 million, as previously reported. A stronger than expected Sunday closed it.

Sony’s Sunday Estimate Was Short By $5 Million

The revision came from the gap between studio projection and actual receipts. Sony estimated $355 million on Sunday from 4,487 North American locations, and the Monday actuals landed at $360 million from that same theater count. Sunday did most of the work. The studio had modeled roughly $84 million for the day and the actual came in at $88.7 million, the second-biggest Sunday on record behind Endgame’s $90.3 million. The revised dailies also moved Friday up to $169.8 million and left Saturday at $101.5 million, second only to Endgame’s $109.2 million. Endgame’s $357.1 million had stood since April 2019, and for most of that time was treated as unreachable.

The Worldwide Number Moved Too

The global opening was revised upward to $932 million, up from the $927 million reported on Sunday. That remains the second-biggest worldwide debut ever and still trails Endgame, which opened to $1.22 billion across all markets in 2019. So the two films now split the records between them: Brand New Day takes domestic, Endgame keeps global.

Four Records In One Weekend

The domestic opening record is the fourth mark this release has set. Brand New Day already held the biggest Thursday previews at $72 million and the biggest single day in history at $169.8 million on Friday with previews included, and it is now the largest opening of any kind in Sony’s history. It is also comfortably Tom Holland’s biggest launch as Peter Parker, ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $260.1 million domestic debut in December 2021. Tracking firm EntTelligence counted 24.1 million moviegoers across the three days, the most it has recorded since it began measuring admissions in October 2020, ahead of the 20 million No Way Home drew.

The Biggest Weekend Theaters Have Ever Had

Combined with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which added $51 million in its third weekend, the domestic box office recorded roughly $430 million across all films, the largest single weekend in the history of American theaters. The previous mark was the $402 million the marketplace posted during Endgame’s opening frame in April 2019. Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman marked the milestone with “360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers” and his colleagues at the studio, adding that records are made to be broken but that this one would be a point of pride for as long as it lasts.

Brand New Day did all of it without a single domestic IMAX screen, because The Odyssey held the format’s North American footprint for three straight weekends. That exclusive run is now ending, and the Spider-Man sequel moves onto IMAX screens in North America this week.

Brand New Day now sits at the top of a domestic chart where Marvel films hold all four leading positions. Endgame is second at $357.1 million, No Way Home third at $260.1 million and Avengers: Infinity War fourth at $257.7 million. Sony released the two Spider-Man titles and Disney the two Avengers films, with Marvel Studios producing all four.
