9 to 5 is coming back to theaters, and Disney is giving the money to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. A newly restored version of the 1980 comedy returns for a one-week run from October 9 through October 15 from 20th Century Studios, and Disney will donate net proceeds from every U.S. ticket to The Dollywood Foundation in support of the literacy program Parton founded.
Tickets are on sale now nationwide. The Imagination Library mails free books to children every month and has sent millions of them around the world.
The First Give Like Dolly Day
Disney made the announcement today, September 25, the first “Give Like Dolly Day.” The new annual celebration honors Parton’s work for children and communities, and its date is a nod to the film’s title. It encourages people to follow her motto: “Dream More, Learn More, Care More, and Be More.”
Disney says businesses across the company are honoring Parton’s life and her impact on entertainment, philanthropy and pop culture. Parton died in August at 80.
A CMA Tribute On ABC And Disney+
The re-release comes ahead of CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton, a two-hour live special with performances, archival footage and personal stories about her life and career. It will be filmed at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Nashville, air live October 21 on ABC and stream on Disney+ in the U.S. and internationally. It will be on Hulu the following day.
The Country Music Association and Belmont will also donate part of the proceeds to the Imagination Library, and Disney is supporting the program separately.
About 9 To 5
9 to 5 was released by 20th Century Fox in December 1980 and marked Parton’s first film role. She starred with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as three office workers who turn the tables on their sexist boss, played by Dabney Coleman. Parton also wrote and sang the title song, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and won two Grammy Awards.
The film became one of the biggest comedies of its year and later inspired a television series and a Broadway musical with a score by Parton.
