Glob Theater Lobby Art, A Laugh Canister And Monsterfied Critters For Monstropolis Go On Display At Hollywood Studios

The first look at the Glob Theater lobby for Monstropolis is now on display at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. New concept art for the lobby of “Welcome to Monstropolis,” the theater show opening with the land in 2027, was first shown on Friday, September 25, alongside fresh marquee art, a Laugh Canister prop and a set of “monsterfied” creature sculpts developed with Pixar. The new pieces were added inside Walt Disney Presents, the park’s preview gallery for upcoming Walt Disney World projects.

Inside The Glob Theater Lobby

The lobby art shows guests waiting beneath chandeliers styled as monsters, each ringed with eyeballs and a jagged row of teeth. A red and gold Monster Concessions stand anchors the room, and framed show posters line the walls between heavy blue and red curtains.

A second piece of concept art moves outside to the Glob Theater marquee, which bills the show as “Welcome to Monstropolis, A Scarefree Theatrical Extravaganza.” Mike Wazowski and Sulley appear out front with arriving guests on a red carpet beneath the sign. A banner on the neighboring building reads “The Monstropolis Department of Human Relations Welcomes You!”

That department is part of the land’s story. Monstropolis’ new Department of Human Relations is inviting humans into the city for the first time, an event the monsters call H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for “Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice.”

What The Show Is

Imagineering revealed the show at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August. Chris Beatty, Vice President at Walt Disney Imagineering, said the monsters in “Welcome to Monstropolis” will introduce humans to their city and highlight how similar monsters and humans really are. “Mike and Sulley will be our hosts,” Beatty said. “Sulley has been working on a small, homespun show, but Mike, ever the showman, has a few surprises up his sleeve that he thinks will bring down the house. Hopefully not literally.”

The show shares its title with “Welcome to Monstropolis,” a new song by Disney Legend Randy Newman. It is the first song Newman has composed for a Disney theme park, and parts of Monstropolis open in 2027 while work continues on the door coaster.

A Laugh Canister And Monsterfied Critters

In Monsters, Inc., Laugh Canisters store the energy that powers the city. Monstropolis now runs on laughter rather than screams, and the land’s monsters will entertain guests to collect their Laugh Power and keep the city running.

Nearby, a row of small sculpts shows the everyday wildlife of Monstropolis, created by Walt Disney Imagineering with Pixar. Placards identify a Monster Pigeon, a Splitting Hare and a Monster Squirrel. The hare has oversized ears and big green eyes, and the squirrel has three eyes, two small horns and three bushy tails.

Along with the Glob Theater, Disney has announced Harryhausen’s, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the Monsters University Alumni Club and the Scareporium shop for Monstropolis. Disney has not announced an exact opening date.
