Walt Disney World Shutting Down Due to Hurricane Milton

Walt Disney World has announced extensive closures in response to Hurricane Milton, which is projected to make landfall in Central Florida this week. The resort will implement phased closures across its parks and entertainment areas, marking yet another instance of its vulnerability to severe weather.

Theme Park Closures and Schedule Adjustments

Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom will close at 1 p.m. on October 9, followed by Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney Springs at 2 p.m. The resort expects these closures to extend through October 10. This includes the cancellation of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, scheduled for October 10 at Magic Kingdom.

All Walt Disney World transportation will stop operations on October 9 after Disney Springs and the parks close. Limited Minnie Van and Mears taxi services will be available for guests staying on property.

Water Parks and Recreational Closures

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, Winter Summerland Miniature Golf, and Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf will also close starting October 9. Blizzard Beach remains closed for scheduled refurbishments.

Impact on Reservations and Refunds

Walt Disney World has temporarily suspended new hotel and theme park reservations through October 10. Pre-paid experiences will be automatically refunded within 7 to 10 business days. Guests planning visits during Hurricane Milton should check for updates, as further closures and cancellations are expected.

History of Hurricane-Related Closures

Walt Disney World has closed several times in the past due to hurricanes. Most recently, the resort shut down for Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Hurricane Irma in 2017. Each time, the parks implemented phased closures, and transportation was halted. Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Dorian in 2019 also forced the resort to shut down operations temporarily.

Assistance for Stranded Guests and Hurricane Victims

Walt Disney World is providing limited transportation services for guests staying on property. The resort is also offering shelter options for stranded visitors and guests unable to leave the area. Guests needing additional assistance or information should contact Disney’s emergency operations team at 407-939-7675 for guidance on lodging, transportation, and other support.
