Mayans M.C. Co-Creator Elgin James Is Adapting S.A. Cosby’s King Of Ashes For FX

S.A. Cosby's King of Ashes and Elgin James

FX is developing a drama series based on S.A. Cosby’s crime novel King of Ashes, with Elgin James adapting the book. James, who co-created Mayans M.C. for FX, is making the series with Amblin, Higher Ground and 20th Television, where he has an overall deal.

Deadline first reported the project on Thursday. FX has not announced a cast, a premiere date or a series order yet, so this is still a show in development.

What King Of Ashes Is About

Cosby’s novel, published in 2025, is a Southern Gothic thriller set in Virginia, where he grew up and still lives. It follows Roman Carruthers, who comes home to his family’s crematory business after his father is left in a coma by a suspicious hit-and-run. Once he is back, he finds out his brother’s criminal debts have put the whole family in danger, and he will do whatever it takes to protect them.

Cosby is a New York Times best-selling author. His other novels include All the Sinners Bleed, Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland, and every one of them has been optioned for film or streaming. His books have been translated into 28 languages, and Netflix’s adaptation of All the Sinners Bleed is set for release next spring. He also has a Marvel novel on the way, Truth to Power: A Luke Cage Marvel Crime Novel.

Who Is Behind It

James will executive produce alongside Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, and Amblin’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. Amblin’s Todd Cohen is a co-executive producer. 20th Television, part of Disney, is the studio behind the project.

The series reunites James with FX, where Mayans M.C., his motorcycle club drama, ran for five seasons. He went on to co-create The Outlaws for Amazon.

He is also busy at Hulu right now. James is shooting a new Prison Break series for the streamer, which was ordered to series last October and has been filming in Los Angeles for months. That show stars Emily Browning, Drake Rodger and Lukas Gage, and it brings back two Mayans M.C. actors, Clayton Cardenas and JR Bourne.
