Christopher Abbott Says Professor X Won’t Show Up In Avengers: Doomsday

Christopher Abbott has a simple answer for anyone hoping to spot him in Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel’s new Professor X says he isn’t in the movie, and his first time playing Charles Xavier will come in X-Men. “I’m not in [Doomsday]. I’ve got to do the X-Men movie first before any of that stuff,” Abbott said with a smile in his Rolling Stone Studio interview with CT Jones. “No coyness.”

Rolling Stone put it just as plainly, saying there are no Charles Xavier cameos coming between now and X-Men’s 2028 premiere.

Why Fans Were Asking

It’s a fair thing to wonder about. Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, 2026, and Patrick Stewart, who played Xavier in Fox’s X-Men films, is in its cast. So are fellow X-Men veterans Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer, with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing, and Marvel has been building up to the release with spots like the Mister Fantastic World Series preview.

With the original Xavier already in the film, a quick look at the next one wouldn’t have been a shock. Marvel loves a surprise cameo. Abbott’s answer just doesn’t leave room for one.

Where Abbott’s Professor X Fits

Abbott was revealed as Charles Xavier at D23 in August, when he joined director Jake Schreier and the rest of the new cast onstage. Marvel Studios’ X-Men opens May 5, 2028, and Abbott joins a cast that also includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor, Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd and Adam Driver.

So when Doomsday arrives in less than two months, the Professor X on screen won’t be Abbott’s. Fans will have to wait for X-Men to see what he does with the role.

The rest of the conversation covered a busy year for the actor, who earned his first Tony nomination in February for playing Biff Loman in Death of a Salesman. He talked about playing Adam Trask in Netflix’s East of Eden, his time on Girls and sneaking into theater auditions early in his career. For Marvel fans, though, the Doomsday answer is the one that matters.
