Indiana Jones Adventure is back open at Disneyland as of today, October 23, after a six-week refurbishment. Much of the work happened where guests will never see it, but it goes after two familiar complaints about the ride: long waits and breakdowns.
We reported the reopening date last week. Now we know what crews actually changed while the temple was dark.
Electric Doors For Mara
The main job this fall was the set of doors that opens onto Mara in the first big show scene. Those doors ran on hydraulic actuators, and they are now fully electric. Nicholas DiBernardo, an area manager for Attractions Engineering Services, told the Los Angeles Times that when the old actuators failed, the doors had to stay open. That spoiled the reveal, and it also slowed the ride down, because fewer vehicles could be sent out so riders would not see the car ahead of them.

A second fix has been in place since May. Vehicles did not always stop in exactly the right spot at load and unload, and before that was corrected, operators had to send empty vehicles through the temple to reset them. A mix of hardware and software changes over the past year solved it. Together, the changes let the ride carry about 125 more guests per hour, which DiBernardo puts at roughly 1,000 more guests a day.

Bigger Pouches, Rebuilt Indy Figures
The biggest cause of downtime is something riders bring with them. A loose water bottle or backpack can fly out on the twists and turns and force a stop, so every vehicle now has a larger pouch that should make it easier to stash your things. Use it, and you are helping keep the ride running for everyone behind you.

There is plenty for fans inside, too. The figures were dusted, blacklight paint was reapplied, and the Indiana Jones Audio-Animatronics figures were taken apart and rebuilt. More large spiders and other creepy critters were added to one of the tunnels, and the skull area got a cleaning and a lighting refresh.

Don’t expect this to be the ride’s last break. DiBernardo said Indiana Jones Adventure typically gets a refurbishment every year because of its size and the number of moving show elements it has. For now, the 1995 attraction is open again in Adventureland, and if the new doors and loading fixes work as planned, more guests should get to ride it each day.
