Susan Egan has a short answer for anyone wondering where she stands. When a commenter asked whether appearing in a video with Deedee Magno Hall meant she supports MAGA, the original Broadway Belle and voice of Megara in Hercules pointed them to her record on marriage equality instead.
“Hi ALFY. I don’t comment on politics as a rule, but if you want to know more about my thoughts, Google Susan Egan marriage equality,” Egan wrote. “I was standing up for my friends maybe before you were even born.”

Why The Question Came Up
Egan and Magno Hall go back to Steven Universe, where Egan voiced Rose Quartz and Magno Hall voiced Pearl. Magno Hall has faced online speculation about her politics since this summer, after fans noticed that she follows Charlie Kirk and other conservative accounts on Instagram. She has never publicly discussed her political views and has not addressed the speculation, as SoapCentral reported in July.
That speculation followed Egan into her own comments. Her reply skipped the debate over her co-star entirely and kept the focus on her own history.
Where That Google Search Leads
Anyone who takes Egan up on her suggestion will land in November 2008. Days after California voters passed Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state, it came out that Scott Eckern, the artistic director of California Musical Theatre in Sacramento, had donated $1,000 in support of the measure.
Egan sent an email calling for a boycott of the theater and urged ticket buyers, writers, musical directors, crew, designers and performers to join her, Playbill reported at the time. “I find it a travesty that the entire arts community is not standing in solidarity for equal rights,” she wrote, according to Backstage. Eckern issued an apology as the backlash grew.
That was 18 years ago, and it is the record Egan is pointing to now when she says she was standing up for her friends.
A Disney Legend This Year
The exchange comes in a big year for Egan. She was named a Disney Legend in 2026 in the voice category, honored as the first actress to bring a Disney princess to life on Broadway when she originated Belle in Beauty and the Beast in 1994, and as the voice of Megara in 1997’s Hercules. She earned Tony and Drama Desk nominations for Belle, and she has gone on to headline with more than 70 symphony orchestras.
