Shang-Chi 2 is alive and well at Marvel Studios. Director Destin Daniel Cretton confirmed the long-gestating sequel is still in active development, offering the most encouraging update in years for fans who have been waiting to see Simu Liu’s Master of Kung Fu headline his own film again.
Cretton Is Still Talking With His Writer
Speaking with Rolling Stone while promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Cretton revealed that he recently discussed the sequel with Dave Callaham, his co-writer on the original film, saying the conversation happened “just a few weeks ago, so fingers crossed.” It is a small but meaningful signal that the project remains on Marvel’s radar even as the studio barrels toward Avengers: Doomsday and the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was one of the brightest spots of Marvel’s pandemic era, earning strong reviews and over $432 million worldwide at a time when theaters were still recovering. A sequel was announced with Cretton attached shortly after its 2021 release, but the project has repeatedly taken a back seat as the director’s plate filled up with other Marvel assignments.
One Of Marvel’s Busiest Directors
That plate is currently overflowing. Cretton directs Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which swings into theaters on July 31, and he serves as an executive producer on Wonder Man, which he recently said could start filming its second season this year. Between those commitments and the schedule crunch created by Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it is easy to see why Shang-Chi 2 has stayed on the shelf.
Still, the pieces are quietly in place. Simu Liu has remained vocal about wanting to return, and he is confirmed to reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday this December, which could set Shang-Chi up for a bigger spotlight once the Multiverse Saga wraps. If Cretton and Callaham are actively trading ideas, the sequel may simply be waiting for its window rather than gathering dust. For now, fans can catch Cretton’s latest when Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives at the end of the month.
