Marvel has cancelled Wonder Man at Disney+, and the detail that stings is the timing. The series was renewed for a second season back in March, its star was nominated for an Emmy this month, and its co-creator was publicly talking about a 2027 production start ten days ago. A writers’ room for that season was never opened.
A Renewal That Quietly Died
Variety first reported the cancellation, with Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter confirming, and showrunner Andrew Guest has since acknowledged it publicly himself. What makes this an unrenewal rather than a straightforward ending is that Disney+ had already committed: the March order had Yahya Abdul-Mateen II returning as Simon Williams, Ben Kingsley back as Trevor Slattery, Destin Daniel Cretton returning to direct and executive produce, and Guest continuing as showrunner.
None of that survived. Variety reports that the season two writers’ room never opened and the writers have been released to take other work, which suggests the decision was made well before it was announced.
Cretton Was Still Hoping Last Week
Cretton, who is in the middle of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour, has spent recent weeks sounding cautiously optimistic about the show. On a red carpet on July 20 he said he hoped cameras would roll early in 2027, the comment behind our earlier report that Wonder Man Season 2 could start filming this year. That optimism now reads as someone who had not been told.
Good Reviews, Thin Numbers
The critical case for the show was never the problem. Season one holds a 91 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Abdul-Mateen earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series, making him the only live-action performer nominated for both a Marvel and a DC project after his Watchmen win.
The viewership case was thinner. All eight episodes dropped on January 27 and drew 618 million minutes in their opening week, good for eighth among streaming originals for the week of January 26 through February 1, per Nielsen. It never returned to the top ten. Disney has never released its own figures.
Marvel Television’s One-And-Done Problem
With Wonder Man gone, Loki and Daredevil: Born Again remain the only live-action Marvel series on Disney+ to run past a single season. Wonder Man carried Marvel Spotlight branding, meaning it was designed as a standalone character study rather than homework for the movies, and its satire of Hollywood made it the least franchise-shaped thing on the slate.
Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery are not off the board. Cancelling a series does not retire its characters, and both can turn up in the MCU whenever Marvel wants them. Neither actor is among the announced cast of Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives December 18.
