FXX has released the trailer for the eighteenth season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and the Gang appears to be drinking non-alcoholic beer. That is the sort of premise this show has built eighteen years on, and it arrives ahead of a premiere on Monday, August 17.
What The Trailer Shows
The footage runs through a Renaissance faire, a wedding, and the general collapse of order at Paddy’s Pub. Carol Kane returns as Frank’s fiancee, and the McPoyles are back, with Jimmi Simpson, Nate Mooney and Thesy Surface all returning to a family the series has used sparingly and to consistently unsettling effect.
FX has also outlined what the season takes aim at, and the list is unusually current: automation, neurodivergence, live action role play, Little League, tent encampments, inheritance schemes, conspiracy spirals and a backlash against drinking. Baseball runs through the season heavily enough that the network’s own announcement leaned on the metaphor.
Two More Episodes Than Usual
Season 18 runs ten episodes, up from the eight that seasons 15, 16 and 17 each carried. That makes it the first ten-episode season since season 14, and in practice it buys the show two extra weeks. Deadline reported the expanded order alongside the season’s key art.
Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob Mac, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito all return, which is to say the cast has not changed since 2005. Mac created the series and executive produces alongside Day, Howerton and a producing bench that includes David Hornsby, Scott Marder and Rob Rosell for FX Productions.
Still The Longest-Running One
Every new season extends a record the show already owns as the longest-running live-action sitcom in American television history. The characters have aged in real time along the way, with the core four now in their fifties and DeVito’s Frank in his eighties, a detail FX pointed to directly in its own announcement.
Here’s the trailer:
The premiere airs at 9pm ET and 6pm PT on FXX and FX with same-night streaming on Hulu, and the series streams on Disney+ internationally. We covered the date announcement when It’s Always Sunny set its August 17 premiere earlier this month.
