Brand New Day Weekend Pushes Marvel To Three Of The Four Biggest Openings Ever

Spider-Man: Brand New Day closed its opening weekend with $927 million worldwide, a number that puts Marvel Studios in territory only the studio itself has ever reached. The film now sits behind only Avengers: Endgame’s $1.2 billion for the biggest global opening weekend of all time, and Marvel now holds three of the four biggest global openings ever recorded: Endgame, Brand New Day, and Avengers: Infinity War’s $640 million.

Domestic Gross Falls Just $2 Million Short Of A Record

Brand New Day earned an estimated $355 million domestically through Sunday, according to Variety. That leaves it $2 million behind Endgame’s $357 million three-day domestic record, and the studio has noted the gap could still close once Monday’s final numbers replace Sunday’s estimate. The film had already set the outright opening day record on Friday with $168 million, as previously reported.

Marvel Now Holds The Top Four Domestic Openings

Variety also confirmed that Marvel Studios now holds the four biggest domestic openings of all time: Endgame at $357 million, Brand New Day at $355 million, Spider-Man: No Way Home at $260 million, and Avengers: Infinity War at $257 million. No other studio appears anywhere in the top four, a run that spans four different directors and eleven years of releases.

A Record Weekend For Theaters Overall

The Brand New Day debut also helped push the entire domestic box office to its biggest collective weekend ever, with more than $406 million in ticket sales across all films in theaters, according to Deadline. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey added another $51 million in its third weekend to help set that mark.

Feige Teases What Comes Next

Asked when Marvel might share more about its upcoming X-Men reboot, Kevin Feige kept the focus on the weekend’s numbers. “Good things come to those who wait, and good things come to those who watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” he told the Associated Press, offering no timeline but tying the studio’s next big reveal to the film’s box office momentum.
