The Warrior Games are coming back to Walt Disney World. Disney announced this week that the annual adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans will return to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex August 7 through 14, 2027, the third time the resort has hosted the event after the 2022 and 2024 editions.
Nearly 200 competitors will take part across 12 adaptive sports, according to the Disney Parks Blog: archery, cycling, field events, indoor rowing, pickleball, powerlifting, precision air, sitting volleyball, swimming, track, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby. Five teams will represent every branch of the military, spanning the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard, Air Force and Space Force, and Special Operations Command. The 2027 edition marks 17 years of the Games, which were first held in 2010, and it will be hosted by the U.S. Army’s Transformation and Training Command with a livestream broadcast planned for the competition.
A Year-Out Announcement With A Flag Retreat Moment
Disney marked the news with a press event at the sports complex featuring remarks from Disney leadership, Warrior Games organizers, sponsors, and former competitors, capped by a pickleball demonstration previewing one of the featured sports. The day before, Army veteran and Warrior Games competitor Tony Smith was honored during the daily Flag Retreat ceremony in Magic Kingdom’s Town Square, where guests applauded as Disney recognized his service.
The ceremony echoed how the resort has treated the event in past years. During the 2024 Games, competitors were welcomed with an event inside Magic Kingdom itself, folding the athletes into the parks rather than keeping the competition confined to the sports complex. The Games are designed as part of the recovery and rehabilitation process, giving service members a stage to demonstrate strength and resilience while building community across the branches.
Why Wide World Of Sports Keeps Getting The Call
The complex has practical advantages for an event like this one. Its indoor and outdoor venues sit inside a resort with accessible infrastructure, on-site transportation, and accommodations, which lets athletes, families, coaches, and spectators stay in one place for the full week. It also keeps the facility busy through a stretch when it is drawing national events of every size, from Major League Pickleball’s regular season finale to youth championships.
The announcement arrives a full year ahead of opening day, giving the military sports community and traveling families a long runway to plan around the resort.
