Treehouse of Horror XXXVII opens with The Simpsons meeting The Nightmare Before Christmas. Executive producer Matt Selman says the opening of the October 25 episode is a mashup produced by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, featuring Simpsons versions of the Nightmare Before Christmas characters.
Before the Halloween episode, the 20th Television Animation series opens Season 38 with “The Children’s Book Job,” airing Sunday, September 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox and streaming the next day on Hulu.
What Else Is In Treehouse Of Horror XXXVII
After the opening, the anthology runs three segments. The first is inspired by Holly Gramazio’s novel The Husbands: Homer goes into the shed and comes out as a different husband for Marge, so she suddenly finds herself married to Lenny, or to Kang and Kodos. Tiffany Haddish guest stars as Marge’s best friend in one of those realities. “She lectures Marge about dating, and it’s like a stand-up set,” Selman says.
The second is pitched as Freaky Friday meets Pet Sematary. Homer accidentally kills Bart and the dog and buries them, and they come back with their bodies switched. In the third, Homer mysteriously vanished years ago, and teenage versions of Bart and Lisa discover that evil witch versions of Patty and Selma have trapped him in endless murderous Driver’s Ed films.
The episode is timed to the show’s current Jack in the Box promotion, a Munchie Meal of Horror with six collectible glow-in-the-dark cups that have already sold out at many locations.
The Season 38 Premiere
“The Children’s Book Job” sends Homer to pick up a reclusive British children’s author, voiced by guest star Emma Thompson, whom Marge has invited to a book fair to save Springfield Elementary from closing. Homer botches the airport pickup and ends up chasing her across town to get her to the school on time. Colin Jost also appears as himself, reading his own children’s book to the students.
A daydream sequence turns Springfield into the worlds of classic children’s books, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Richard Scarry’s books, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Dan Vebber wrote the episode and Matthew Nastuk directed.
Later this season, “Diary of a Chimpy Kid” on October 4 has Bart and Lisa adopting a baby chimp. “The Kosmic Kruiser” traps Bart and Lisa in an abandoned immersive theme park experience.
The Movie Still Has A Working Title
The Simpsons sequel from 20th Century Studios is set for September 3, 2027, moved from its original July 23, 2027 date. Selman says the movie is already written. “The working title is ‘New Simpsons Movie,’ but we might have an actual title,” he says. “It hasn’t been approved yet.”
Between Fox seasons, the show also makes Disney+ exclusive episodes, including the Simpsley episode released in July.
