Marvel Studios has more Avengers: Doomsday casting to reveal. Anthony Russo, who directs the film with his brother Joe, said the viral casting announcement was never the full list. “The pattern that you’re sensing is real,” Anthony said in an interview published by The Walt Disney Company on Tuesday. “We have absolutely not announced the entire cast. There is more to come.”
Spoiler warning: The rest of this article describes scenes from the Avengers: Doomsday footage and the new material shown with Avengers Endgame: Encore.
The comment came up because of one scene in the extended Doomsday footage attached to Avengers Endgame: Encore, which opened in theaters this past weekend. That scene shows Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., collecting Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo, for reasons the footage does not explain. Ruffalo’s name was not part of the viral casting announcement. Anthony confirmed that more familiar actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will turn up in the film.

The Doomsday footage also includes a scene at the Time Variance Authority. Mobius, Casey and OB, played by Owen Wilson, Eugene Cordero and Ke Huy Quan, watch the Multiverse collapse through a chain of concurrent incursions.
“I think it’s one of the more significant events that’s ever happened in the MCU,” Joe said. “This is sort of the end of times. The TVA’s sole job is to protect the timelines from collapsing, and now they’re all collapsing at once. In that footage alone, you see the end of thousands of universes in seconds. So, something catastrophic is happening.” Who or what caused the collapse remains a mystery for now.
Why The Russos Went Back To Endgame
Avengers Endgame: Encore adds new material to the 2019 film, including a scene in which Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, comes knocking after the happy ending given to Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter.
“We love that movie for what it is, and we know many other people do as well. Looking at it again through a new lens was something we approached very carefully,” Anthony said. “But here’s the thing: When we made that film, we were so specifically committed to that movie as an ending of stories, not a beginning of new stories. Many years later, as we started to conceive a road forward that would evolve into Doomsday, it just begged of us: ‘You really need to pick the story up from where you left it in Endgame.'”
Encore Posts The Second Biggest Re-Release Debut Ever
The re-release opened at No. 1 with an estimated $86 million worldwide, split between $26 million domestic and $60 million international. That ranks as the second highest global debut of all time for a re-release. The weekend also pushed Marvel Studios past $35.075 billion at the global box office across its 38 films since 2008.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18. Tickets for both the Encore presentation and Doomsday are on sale now. Anthony said the brothers often find “the most delight” in smaller characters. “Part of the thrill is it allows us to keep things surprising and unpredictable in terms of who could pick up and carry the ball at any given moment,” he said.
