Disney and Marvel Studios’ Avengers Endgame: Encore opened at No. 1 with an estimated $26 million from 3,060 theaters in North America over the September 25 to 27 weekend. The opening lands at the top of the range it was tracking toward after Friday and lifts Avengers: Endgame’s lifetime domestic total to $884.3 million.
The weekend broke down to $11.2 million on Friday, including $3.8 million from Thursday previews, then $8.6 million on Saturday and an estimated $6.2 million on Sunday.
Encore Passes Revenge Of The Sith
The $26 million start beats the $25.4 million opening of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’s 20th anniversary re-release in 2025. It ranks third among re-release openings domestically, behind the $35.9 million posted by the 1997 re-release of Star Wars and the $30.2 million for The Lion King 3D in 2011.
Encore also outpaced Revenge of the Sith in previews, with $3.8 million on Thursday against the $3.4 million Sith earned ahead of its own re-release.
Premium Screens Carried The Weekend
IMAX and Infinity Vision screens combined for 60 percent of the weekend gross. Infinity Vision is Disney’s certification for premium large format auditoriums, and Encore is the first release to carry it. Encore runs 6 minutes and 17 seconds of added footage on IMAX and Infinity Vision screens, against 2 minutes and 6 seconds on standard screens.
Audiences gave the re-release a 91 percent positive score and an 81 percent definite recommend in PostTrak exit polling. Moviegoers aged 18 to 34 made up two-thirds of the crowd.
Worldwide, Encore opened to an estimated $86 million, and the weekend pushed Marvel Studios to $35.075 billion at the global box office across its 38 films. Avengers: Endgame now stands at $2.885 billion worldwide, second all time and $39 million behind Avatar.
The Rest Of The Box Office
Sony’s Resident Evil took second place in its second weekend with $23.3 million, down 61 percent, for a domestic total of $103.5 million. Paramount’s The Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt, opened third with $20 million. A24’s Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson, opened fourth with $19.2 million, and Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island opened fifth with $12.8 million.
Avengers: Endgame’s $884.3 million domestic total still trails Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the all-time domestic leader, which added $4.1 million in its ninth weekend for a total of $950.7 million.
Encore’s added footage sets up Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, which opens in theaters on December 18.
