Tickets for D23’s 9 to 5 screening at the El Capitan Theatre are now on sale to the public. The newly restored 1980 comedy plays the Hollywood Boulevard theater on Sunday, October 4 at 7 p.m. General sales opened Monday, September 28, after D23 General and Gold Members got first access on September 25. D23 is billing the night as the first chance to see the 4K restoration on a big screen.
Tickets are $23 and include a reserved seat, a 64-ounce popcorn tub and a 24-ounce fountain drink. Before the film, producer Bruce Gilbert will introduce the screening and share behind-the-scenes stories. Gilbert produced 9 to 5 for IPC Films, Jane Fonda’s production company.
Ahead Of The Theatrical Re-Release
The El Capitan date puts the 4K restoration on a big screen five days before 20th Century Studios brings 9 to 5 back to theaters for one week, from October 9 through October 15. Disney will donate net proceeds from every U.S. ticket purchased to The Dollywood Foundation in support of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a literacy program that has provided millions of free books to children around the world. Parton died in August at 80.
Disney announced the theatrical re-release on September 25, the first Give Like Dolly Day, a new annual celebration that encourages people to make a difference in a child’s life. The date was chosen as a nod to the film’s title.
About The Film
In 9 to 5, three office workers take revenge on the boss making their lives miserable. Lily Tomlin plays the all-knowing office manager who trained him but cannot get promoted, Jane Fonda is a befuddled newcomer, and Parton is the personal secretary everyone presumes is having an affair with him. Dabney Coleman plays the boss.
Colin Higgins directed from a screenplay he wrote with Patricia Resnick. 20th Century Fox released the film on December 19, 1980, and it was Parton’s film debut. She also wrote and sang the title song, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and won two Grammy Awards. The film runs 1 hour and 50 minutes, and it later inspired a television series and a Broadway musical with a score by Parton.
Tickets are sold through the El Capitan Theatre’s website. Anyone who wants to watch before the big-screen showing can stream 9 to 5 on Hulu, or through Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S.
