Disney and Marvel Studios’ Avengers Endgame: Encore earned an estimated $86 million worldwide in its opening weekend, with $26 million from North America and $60 million from international markets. The re-release lifts Avengers: Endgame’s lifetime global total to $2.885 billion, just behind the $2.92 billion earned by Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time.
Encore was the No. 1 film in the world this weekend, ahead of Sony’s Resident Evil at $50.3 million and Paramount’s The Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt, at $50.1 million. The weekend also pushed Marvel Studios to $35.075 billion at the global box office across its 38 films.
Record Openings Around The World
The $60 million international start is the second biggest overseas opening ever for a re-release, behind the $67 million Titanic 3D earned in 2012.
Encore opened at No. 1 in China with $13.5 million, the United Kingdom with $5.4 million, Mexico with $4.2 million, Italy with $2.6 million, Brazil with $2.2 million, Germany with $2 million and Australia. It was the top foreign film in India with $2.8 million, Japan with $2.6 million and Spain with $1.7 million.
Disney estimates Encore set the opening weekend record for a Hollywood re-release in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil and more than two dozen other markets, including India, Turkey, Poland, the Philippines and Hong Kong. In South Korea, it opened second behind the local film The Assassin during the Chuseok holiday.
Third Best Re-Release Start In North America
At home, the $26 million opening from 3,060 theaters is the third best ever for a re-release, behind the 1997 return of Star Wars at $35.9 million and The Lion King 3D at $30.2 million in 2011. It landed at the top of the $24 million to $26 million range Encore was tracking toward after Friday.
IMAX screens brought in $13.7 million of the worldwide total, with $4 million from North America and $9.7 million from overseas.
Disney Credits The Fanbase
“The success of the re-release reiterates that there’s a massive fanbase for this franchise, and the fact that it’s a seven-year old movie on Disney+, it’s an incredible opening,” said Andrew Cripps, head of global theatrical distribution for Walt Disney Studios.
Encore brings the 2019 film back to theaters with new footage from Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, which opens in theaters on December 18.
