Aquatopia ran its last day at Tokyo DisneySea on September 14, closing an opening day attraction that spent twenty five years spinning guests across a lagoon in Port Discovery. Cast members saw riders off through the final cycles.
One Of Disney’s First Trackless Rides
Aquatopia opened with Tokyo DisneySea on September 4, 2001, and what made it significant was hidden under the water. Walt Disney Imagineering built it as one of its earliest attempts at a ride system with no track at all, running 36 vehicles across an open lagoon, spinning and changing direction without warning and passing close to fountains, rock formations and whirlpools without ever touching them.
Disney has used trackless systems on far more elaborate attractions since. Aquatopia did it first, outdoors, on water, on a ride most guests treated as a way to cool off.
It Went Out In The Wet Version
Anyone who rode it in its final weeks rode the soaked one. The Aquatopia “Get Soaked” version had been running since July 2 as part of Tokyo Disney Resort’s Summer Cool-Off event, adding extra water features and sprays to an attraction that was already generous with them. The standard version ran for the last time earlier this year, so the ride never returned to its normal form before closing.
Aquatopia turned 25 on September 4. It closed ten days later, without a celebration for the anniversary.
Port Discovery Is Being Rebuilt Around The Space
Oriental Land Company announced the permanent closure in April, giving roughly five months of notice, and tied it to a much larger plan for the land. The closure follows from OLC’s 2035 Long-Term Management Strategy, published in April 2025, which included concept artwork showing a reimagined Port Discovery with Aquatopia replaced by a large show building.
OLC has not said what goes inside that building, and has indicated only that the work would be completed within roughly ten years. The rest of the land survives in the concept art, including the Tokyo DisneySea Electric Railway, the Transit Steamer Line, Nemo and Friends SeaRider and Horizon Bay Restaurant.
What Happens Now
The attraction is closed permanently as of September 15, and OLC has not published a construction timeline for what replaces it. No demolition date has been announced.
Aquatopia was there on the first day Tokyo DisneySea existed, and it was part of the park for every one of the twenty five years that followed.
