Disney’s robot revolution is just getting started. After the show-stopping debut of its walking, talking robotic Olaf, Walt Disney Imagineering has been openly teasing what comes next for its next-generation robotic character program, and Frozen fans have a lot to look forward to in World of Frozen lands around the globe.
The Olaf Robot Started It All
Imagineering’s free-roaming Olaf is the most advanced robotic character the company has ever built. Unveiled by Walt Disney Imagineering leadership at Disneyland Paris, the character made his official parks debut on March 29, 2026, as part of the “A Celebration in Arendelle” lagoon show at World of Frozen in Disney Adventure World, and began limited-time appearances at Hong Kong Disneyland’s World of Frozen this spring. As Disney Parks Blog detailed, the figure was trained using deep reinforcement learning to walk, waddle, and gesture just like the animated character, speaks with pre-recorded lines from original voice actor Josh Gad, and even shimmers like fresh snow thanks to iridescent fibers.
Sven Could Be Next
Kyle Laughlin, Senior Vice President of Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development, has directly raised the possibility of a robotic Sven joining the lineup, telling Fast Company the reindeer is among the characters being considered as the program expands. Laughlin has also confirmed the Olaf robot will eventually appear at Disney parks and on cruise ships globally, including Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World, with a roaming meet-and-greet as the long-term goal. “The North Star goal that we have is to be able to have that huggable moment,” Laughlin said.
The possibilities go beyond Arendelle, too. Imagineering has floated robotic lions for the Lion King land coming to Disney Adventure World, and Laughlin has said the technology behind the free-roaming characters and traditional ride Audio-Animatronics will increasingly merge, pointing to the walking Walt Disney figure at Disneyland as an early example.
Trolls Are Already Part of World of Frozen
The trolls of the Valley of the Living Rock are already stepping off the screen in Paris. Arendelle Village at Disney Adventure World features encounters with Mossie, an adorable baby troll eager to make new friends, and the Fjord View Shop sells Rúna, an interactive baby troll toy that blinks, moves her ears, lights up, reacts to touch, and communicates with other trolls she meets around the land. Between the trolls, the tiny mischievous Snowgies from Frozen Fever, and the rest of Arendelle’s supporting cast, Imagineering has no shortage of small, expressive characters that are natural fits for the same technology that brought Olaf to life.
Why This Matters
For decades, Disney characters have lived on screens, in parades, and inside ride scenes. Free-roaming robotic characters change that equation entirely, letting guests share space with a character that walks, reacts, and interacts in real time. Imagineering has said these characters can move between shows, atmosphere entertainment, parades, and meet-and-greets, making them complete characters rather than single-scene figures. Whatever Frozen character gets the robotic treatment next, one thing is clear: the line between the movies and the parks is getting thinner every year.
