Disney+ Is Developing A Live-Action Kane Chronicles Series With Rick Riordan After Netflix Let It Go

Disney+ is developing a live-action series based on Rick Riordan’s The Kane Chronicles, with Riordan creating the show alongside Angela Robinson, the project was announced September 3. It is the second of Riordan’s mythology series to reach the streamer after Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and it arrives two years after Netflix let a film version go.

The project is in development only. No cast, episode count, production start or premiere date has been announced. 20th Television produces, with Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Robinson, and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell of The Gotham Group as executive producers, the same producing team behind Percy Jackson. Robinson’s credits include How to Get Away with Murder, True Blood and The L Word, she wrote and directed the 2017 feature Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, and she most recently directed episodes of Netflix’s Wednesday.

Egyptian Gods In The Percy Jackson Universe

The Kane Chronicles is a trilogy, The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire and The Serpent’s Shadow, published between 2010 and 2012, built on Egyptian mythology and set in the same world as Riordan’s Camp Half-Blood books and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. The story follows siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, magicians descended from the pharaohs Narmer and Ramses the Great, who are raised apart and thrown together when their father unleashes the god of chaos.

The official logline for the series follows that setup. When their father unleashes the god of chaos and vanishes, the estranged Kane siblings must master their inherited Egyptian magic, forge unlikely alliances and rescue him before warring gods wreak havoc on the modern world.

A Long Road From Netflix To Disney+

Riordan announced in September 2020 that Netflix was developing the books as a trilogy of feature films. The project stalled, the option lapsed, and the rights reverted to Riordan in early 2024. 20th Television picked up the television rights after that, and the Disney+ development deal is the first public sign of movement since.

Disney’s interest follows the performance of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which premiered in December 2023 and became the biggest premiere in Disney Branded Television history, with the first episode drawing 26.2 million views across Disney+ and Hulu in its first three weeks. Season 3 arrives November 20 and adapts The Titan’s Curse, the third book in that series.

What Happens Next

A development order means scripts and a creative plan, not a greenlight. Disney+ would still have to order the series before casting begins, and the Percy Jackson show took roughly three and a half years from its May 2020 development announcement to its premiere. If the Kane siblings follow a similar path, the earliest realistic window is 2028 or later.

The two properties were split in the first place because Disney said no. Riordan told a fan on Goodreads that Disney had passed on The Kane Chronicles multiple times before Netflix showed interest, comparing the situation to X-Men and Spider-Man sitting at other studios before the Marvel Cinematic Universe existed. With both series now under one roof, the crossover the books already staged, in the Demigods and Magicians short story collection, gives Disney+ an obvious way to connect the two shows if both survive long enough.
