Disney+ continues to build out its international content slate with a notable new acquisition. The streaming service has landed The Great White, an Australian legal dramedy starring Hugo Weaving, for its UK library. The six-part series is produced by See-Saw Films, the acclaimed banner behind Slow Horses and Heartstopper, and is currently filming in Sydney ahead of a 2027 premiere.
Hugo Weaving Stars In The Great White
Weaving plays Alan Armstrong, a brilliant but disgraced barrister who receives a 12-month supervision order for professional misconduct and finds himself working out of a struggling law office above a panel beater’s shop in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Crushed by debt and desperate to rebuild his reputation, Armstrong reluctantly takes on what seems like a minor dangerous dog case. What begins as a fight to save a dog’s life draws him into the unexpected world of animal law and becomes a series of cases on behalf of animals.
The ensemble cast includes Eamon Farren, Arlo Green, Miranda Otto, Sacha Horler, Brigid Zengeni, James Majoos, Emily Barclay, and newcomer Dinasha Perera. Directors on the series include Alyssa McClelland, Samantha Lang, and Mia Wasikowska, who makes her television directing debut. The series was created by Ange Betzien and originated and developed alongside Samantha Lang, both of whom executive produce alongside Liz Watts, Emile Sherman, Iain Canning, Helen Gregory, and Weaving himself.
Disney+ Expands Its International Drama Offering
The Great White is produced for ABC Australia with major investment from Screen Australia and Screen NSW. It will debut on ABC Australia and Disney+ UK in 2027. International sales are handled by Mediawan Rights, which also confirmed that a major German broadcaster is expected to be announced as an additional partner. Mediawan Rights CEO Sally Habbershaw said the combination of See-Saw’s creative track record, Weaving’s casting, and the show’s original premise drove early international momentum.
