Disneyland’s New Esplanade Security Checkpoint Gets Its Blue Canopy

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park during the day

The new Disneyland Esplanade security checkpoint finally has its canopy, and it is bright blue. The cover went up on the east end of the Esplanade, where the old ticket booths used to stand, and it now shades a long lane beside the construction fence.

Our own Matt Desmond shared the first look from the park on Friday morning, October 23. From above, the canopy runs the length of the new structure, with its posts set along the edge of the walkway. Underneath, the area is still a work zone, with ladders, cable, tools and supply boxes spread across the concrete. Past the fence, crews are still grading dirt on the rest of the site.

It has been a slow build to this point. Frames for the checkpoint started rising in the week before October 12, and by October 14 the structure looked nearly ready for its cover. A high-wind event that weekend was expected to hold the canopy back, and now the cover is on. Guests walking the Esplanade can see the checkpoint with its roof in place.

Where The New Checkpoint Fits

This is the move Disneyland laid out in September, when east security screening was set to shift onto the old ticket-booth site so work on the rest of the Esplanade could keep going. The last two ticket booths on that side came down the week of October 12, clearing the way for the checkpoint you see now. Disney has not announced when guests will start screening there.

Downtown Disney Security Is Open Again

There is good news on the west side, too. The Downtown Disney security checkpoint is back open as of Friday. It closed on October 16, when guests were sent to the Disneyland Hotel security entrance instead, and by that weekend they were being routed to the checkpoint past Din Tai Fung.

If you are arriving from the Pixar Pals parking structure, you can screen at the Downtown Disney checkpoint again instead of walking over to the one past Din Tai Fung. On the east side, guests still go through the existing screening area until the new checkpoint opens. You can check Disneyland’s park page for current hours before you go, and we will keep following the Esplanade work as the checkpoint gets closer to opening.
