Disney’s live-action remake of Tangled has officially begun filming. Production on the film started in Alicante, Spain, with cameras rolling on the highly anticipated reimagining of the beloved 2010 animated film. The cast includes Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel, and Diego Luna in a new role created specifically for the live-action film, as reported by Deadline.
The Cast And What We Know
Teagan Croft, best known for playing Raven in DC’s Titans series, is stepping into the role of Rapunzel for Disney’s live-action version. Milo Manheim, who appeared in the Zombies franchise, plays Flynn Rider. Kathryn Hahn joins as the villainous Mother Gothel, and Diego Luna rounds out a cast that leans toward contemporary performers rather than established A-list stars, a deliberate choice consistent with Disney’s approach on recent live-action films.
Michael Gracey, known for The Greatest Showman and Better Man, is directing the film, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor writing the screenplay. A release date has not yet been confirmed, though industry trackers point to a 2027 theatrical release as the most likely window given that the eight-month shoot is beginning in mid-2026.
Why Tangled?
The original Tangled was a turning point for Walt Disney Animation Studios. Released in 2010, it marked the return of the classic Disney musical formula after a decade of experimentation and was the most expensive animated film ever made at the time of its release. It launched “I See the Light” into the Disney canon and introduced Rapunzel and Flynn Rider as two of the most beloved Disney characters of the modern era. The original is now streaming on Disney+.
Tangled joins a substantial live-action Disney slate that already includes the upcoming live-action Moana, set for release on July 10, 2026. For more Disney movie news, check out our coverage of the new Lilo & Scratch animated short.
