Mickey Gets Sporty
Two of Disney’s most recognizable brands are joining forces for a fun and active new project. ESPN and Disney Jr. are teaming up to bring a fresh set of Mickey Mouse shorts designed to inspire kids to get outside and play. It’s a charming crossover that blends Disney’s beloved animation with the energy of the sports world.
What the Shorts Are All About
The new collection, titled “Me & Mickey: Let’s Play Sports,” debuted Monday, June 29 on Disney+ and Disney Jr. According to Disney TV Animation, the collection features 10 shorts and is an extension of the popular Me & Mickey vlog series. By pairing Mickey, Minnie, and their friends with sports-themed adventures, the shorts introduce preschoolers to basic techniques like kicking a soccer ball and playing catch, while emphasizing teamwork and active play. It’s the kind of wholesome, positive content that fits perfectly within the Disney Jr. lineup.
Collaborations between Disney’s various divisions often produce some of the most delightful content, and a team-up between ESPN’s sports expertise and Disney Jr.’s family-friendly programming is a natural fit. The project was developed in collaboration with the Positive Coaching Alliance, reflecting a genuine effort to weave positive life skills into the storytelling. Mickey has always been a versatile character, equally at home on the playground as he is on the big screen.
More Than Just Shorts
The initiative goes beyond the screen. The collaboration also marks the second year of a partnership with the nonprofit Every Kid Sports, which provides grants to income-restricted families to help cover youth sports registration fees for children ages 3 to 7. Last year, the program supported more than 1,200 families across eight U.S. communities, giving the whimsical shorts a genuinely meaningful real-world component.
This announcement also arrives as Disney continues to invest heavily in content for its youngest viewers. The company recently rebranded Disney Branded Television to Disney Kids & Family, underscoring its commitment to programming that resonates with children and families. Projects like “Me & Mickey: Let’s Play Sports” reflect that ongoing priority.
A Win for Families
Between the appeal of Mickey and friends, the get-up-and-go spirit of the shorts, and the charitable push to make youth sports more accessible, this collaboration looks like a wholesome addition to the Disney Jr. slate. “Me & Mickey: Let’s Play Sports” is streaming now on Disney+ and airing on Disney Jr.
