The Expedition Everest Yeti is coming back to life. Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum made the announcement Saturday at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, telling the Honda Center crowd that Disney is restoring the massive Audio-Animatronics figure inside the Animal Kingdom coaster, and the roar from the audience nearly matched the beast’s.
The End Of The Disco Yeti Era
When Expedition Everest opened in April 2006, its finale put riders face to face with one of the largest and most complex Audio-Animatronics figures Disney had ever built. The full motion effect did not last long. For most of the ride’s two decades, the Yeti has stood frozen in place while a strobe light created the illusion of movement, earning the figure its affectionate fan nickname, the Disco Yeti. Fixing it has been one of the longest running requests in the Disney fan community, complicated by the figure’s scale and its position deep inside the nearly 200 foot Forbidden Mountain. The creature is the ride’s whole premise, and the queue spends considerable effort selling it before you ever board, with a trailside museum of supposed evidence that something enormous is loose on the mountain.
Mazloum interrupted host Neil Patrick Harris to deliver the news, declaring “We’re bringing the Yeti back to life inside Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom!” The showcase had been building to it all night. The opening musical number riffed on attractions running in B mode, and Disney Legend Joe Rohde, the Imagineer who led Expedition Everest’s creation, made a surprise appearance during that number to “fix” a malfunctioning animatronic. Gloria Gaynor then gave the long dancing Yeti a proper send off, performing her 1978 disco hit “I Will Survive” in its honor.
No Timeline Yet
Disney did not say when the restored Yeti will debut or what the work involves, and the company has not indicated whether Expedition Everest will need an extended closure to get there. Rohde explained the difficulty publicly back in 2023, describing the problem as a complex interface between finance, operations, marketing, design, timing, engineering, narrative and guest satisfaction, all of which had to line up before a fix became viable. Saturday’s announcement says that alignment has finally happened.
One meaningful detail did arrive on Sunday: the figure is being refreshed and repaired to come back to life in its same location inside Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. That rules out a relocated finale or a replacement figure elsewhere in the mountain. The original Yeti, in its original spot, is the one getting fixed, which is exactly the version fans spent two decades asking for.
The commitment lands during the biggest construction era in Animal Kingdom history, with Tropical Americas rising on the former DinoLand U.S.A. site nearby. The park’s attention to craft has been visible in smaller ways too, like the carved wood roof that recently topped the Tropical Americas carousel. For a generation of guests who have only ever seen the Yeti in a strobe flash, the mountain is about to get its monster back.
