Kingdom Hearts Fortnite Crossover Arrives This Week And The Keyblade Swaps Mickey For A Llama

Epic Games confirmed Sunday that Sora arrives in Fortnite this week, ending a wait that has run since the Kingdom Hearts crossover was first announced in August. The official Fortnite account posted a five second teaser at noon Pacific showing the character in game for the first time, standing on a beach built to look like Destiny Islands with the Kingdom Key resting on his shoulder.

Look closely at that Keyblade and something is missing. In the Kingdom Hearts games the Kingdom Key hangs from a keychain capped with Mickey’s three circle silhouette. The Fortnite version carries a llama charm instead, the head of the game’s loot mascot. Sora himself is untouched, wearing the black and red outfit from Kingdom Hearts II, and the closing card pairs the Fortnite logo with a Disney branded Kingdom Hearts lockup. The teaser also stages the same beach and the same raised Keyblade that opened the reveal trailer for Kingdom Hearts III.

What Epic Has Confirmed So Far

Epic has confirmed the week and almost nothing else. There is no date, no price, and no list of what ships alongside the Outfit. The crossover sits inside Chapter 7 Season 4, subtitled Override, which launched August 20 and runs through November 1. Epic named the Kingdom Key as a Battle Royale item when it laid out that season in August, grouping it with Rebecca’s Guns from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, so the Keyblade should be swingable in a match rather than a shop only pickaxe. The teaser’s own legal card reads “in-game purchase required,” which points to the Item Shop rather than the Battle Pass.

Sora Rarely Leaves His Own Series

Sora has stayed close to home since the first Kingdom Hearts shipped in 2002. His most prominent appearance outside the series came in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2021, where he arrived as the final downloadable fighter. A Fortnite crossover had been rumored for years before Epic confirmed it in August, as part of an Override lineup that also pulls in Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Pac-Man, Tetris and Joker from Persona 5.

Disney Owns A Piece Of The Studio Making It Happen

Disney put 1.5 billion dollars into Epic Games in February 2024 for an equity stake, paired with a multiyear project to build a persistent universe that connects to Fortnite and carries characters from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar. Disney properties have arrived in the game at a steady clip since, including the promotion that linked Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Disneyland to Fortnite last month.

Kingdom Hearts is in its busiest stretch in years. Kingdom Hearts IV is targeting a late 2027 release across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, and an original animated series set in the franchise is in development for Disney Channel and Disney+.
