Marvel is marking Spider-Woman’s fiftieth anniversary by handing her Carnage. A new ongoing series launches November 4 with Jessica Drew carrying the symbiote inside her, and the book is being pitched as the darkest run of her career.
Detective Work, Not Superheroics
Spider-Woman #1 comes from writer Dan Watters, who wrote Loki, and artist Andrea Broccardo, whose Spider-Man Noir work is the clearest signal of the tone. The premise sends Jessica back to her private investigator roots, teaming her with Daily Bugle journalist Ben Urich to chase the cases other heroes step around.
Watters described the work as digging into leads too dangerous for the Bugle’s own reporters, uncovering what he called “some of the strangest crimes in New York City.” Broccardo said he was glad to return to the dark atmosphere he worked in on Spider-Man Noir.
How She Ends Up With Carnage
The setup happens elsewhere. Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity #5 arrives next month and contains the development that leaves Jessica in possession of the symbiote, so readers who want the mechanics will need that issue first.
Marvel’s own solicitation leans into the horror of it, promising old foes returning from the dead and a Carnage that is only barely contained, with the danger framed as coming from inside Jessica rather than from the symbiote alone. That is a meaningful distinction for a character whose powers have always carried a slightly unsettling edge.
September Comes First
Before the ongoing series, the Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1 lands in September, opening with a Watters and Broccardo story that leads directly into the new run. The one-shot also carries a second story from Ann Nocenti, the writer behind a celebrated Daredevil run, with art by Stefano Raffaele.
Jessica Drew first appeared in 1977 and has spent five decades bouncing between espionage, super-heroics and detective work without ever quite settling into one. Sending her back to the private investigator beat with a monster in her head is at least a version of the character nobody has tried before.
Spider-Woman #1 is priced at $4.99. It arrives during a strong stretch for Disney-owned comics, following the Comic-Con reveals that brought a first look at Gargoyles #1 from Dynamite.
