Marvel’s Official Doomsday Watchlist Has 15 Titles, And WandaVision Is Not One Of Them

Marvel has finally answered the question every lapsed fan asks before an Avengers movie: what do I actually need to watch? Disney+ launched an official Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday collection on August 16, a 15-title watchlist gathering the movies and shows the studio considers the essential homework before the December 18 release. Its combined runtime lands around 42 hours, which sounds like a lot until you remember the full Marvel Cinematic Universe now runs more than 650 hours.

Fox Mutants Make The Official Syllabus

The most telling inclusions are the oldest ones. Fox’s X-Men from 2000 and its sequel X2 both made the list, films that predate the MCU entirely, confirming how central the original X-Men cast is to the story Marvel has been assembling. The rest of the selection spans the Infinity Saga anchors Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, multiverse groundwork like Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the newest team entries in Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

The picks track exactly with the film Marvel has described, one that unites the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the original X-Men against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. The list functions less like a nostalgia tour and more like a map of which corners of the multiverse actually matter in December.

The Omissions Are The Real Conversation

What Marvel left off is fueling more debate than what it included, as GamesRadar chronicled. Captain Marvel and The Marvels are both absent even though The Marvels feeds directly into the multiverse story, and even though the Doctor Doom costume Marvel displayed at San Diego Comic-Con carried a Captain Marvel logo on one shoulder. Neither Ant-Man film made the cut despite Paul Rudd’s confirmed return. The Guardians of the Galaxy are shut out entirely.

The omission that stings most is WandaVision. The show that launched Marvel’s Disney+ era and set up the Scarlet Witch’s entire multiverse arc did not make the essential list, a curious call given that VisionQuest arrives October 14 to conclude the trilogy WandaVision started, two months before Doomsday opens. Whether the omissions are simple runtime trimming or a quiet signal about who is and is not in the movie is exactly the argument Marvel seems happy to let fans have. Every title, on the list or off it, is streaming on Disney+ either way.
