Monstropolis Is Rising Fast
Construction on Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is moving at an impressive pace, and a fresh wave of updates shows just how much progress has been made. The upcoming land based on Disney and Pixar’s beloved Monsters, Inc. franchise is starting to look like a real place, with several major milestones now visible on site.
What’s New on Site
The latest construction updates reveal four significant developments happening simultaneously across the Monstropolis construction zone. The land’s four entrance pillars are now in place, giving guests their first sense of the grand gateway that will welcome them into Monstropolis. Brickwork theming has also arrived at The Glob Theater, one of the land’s key show venues, which is being reworked from the former Muppet*Vision 3D building, adding texture and character to what will become one of the most immersive areas of the land.
Most excitingly for coaster fans, Harryhausen’s facade is taking shape. Harryhausen’s is the fan-favorite sushi restaurant from the Monsters, Inc. film, taking over the former Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano, and its appearance as a land anchor has long been one of the most anticipated elements of the new area. Seeing its exterior come to life is a major moment for anyone who has been following the land’s development. Additionally, very tall pillars have been installed for the coaster, giving a clearer sense of the ride’s scale and the ambitious engineering involved.
What Is Monstropolis?
Monstropolis is the name Disney officially confirmed for the new Monsters, Inc.-themed land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The land will be anchored by a coaster inspired by the Door Vault from the film, in which riders will weave through a massive array of colorful doors in what promises to be one of the most visually striking ride experiences at any Disney park. As Blog Mickey reported, Disney has confirmed the ride will be its first-ever suspended coaster as well as its first vertical-lift coaster, a combination of ride technology that does not currently exist anywhere in the Disney parks system.
The land has been under construction for some time, and this latest batch of updates suggests the visual theming is now accelerating alongside the ride infrastructure. When complete, Monstropolis will join a Hollywood Studios campus that has been steadily evolving with major new additions over the past several years. Disney has not yet announced an official opening date, though industry observers expect a 2027 or 2028 debut, with more details anticipated at D23 in August 2026.
An Exciting Time to Watch
For Disney Parks fans, few things are more thrilling than watching a new land transform from steel and concrete into something that genuinely feels like stepping into a movie. Monstropolis is clearly well on its way, and these latest milestones suggest the wait for Sully, Mike, and the whole monstrous crew won’t be much longer.
