Marvel Unlimited is shutting down, and the new Marvel Comics app built by WEBTOON Entertainment will replace it when it launches November 16. Marvel stopped taking new Marvel Unlimited sign-ups on October 5.
The app will open with more than 35,000 comics from Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Studios, and the library is set to keep growing with more stories from across Disney. WEBTOON built it from the ground up for phones and the web, and it will support both traditional page-by-page comics and vertical-scroll formats.
What The Marvel Comics App Costs
There are two tiers, and both are priced before tax. Base costs $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year and covers the full library, with new issues arriving as soon as three months after their print release. Ultimate costs $12.49 a month or $99.99 a year and adds new comics as soon as 30 days after print.
Readers who pre-register now at marvel.webtoon.com can claim a limited-time founding member price of $59.99 plus tax for their first year of Ultimate Annual. That payment is charged at purchase, and the subscription starts once the code is redeemed after launch. It then renews at $99.99 plus tax a year until canceled. The offer is limited to readers 18 and older.
For longtime subscribers, Ultimate is where the real upgrade is. Marvel Unlimited has added new issues about three months after they go on sale since 2020, the same wait Base will have. Ultimate cuts that wait to as soon as 30 days, so new launches like Midnight Spider-Man, which opens Marvel’s Midnight Universe horror line in comic shops October 7, show up much sooner.
The app is also built around discovery. There will be a scrolling wall of covers to browse, recommendations based on what you read, and pages for individual characters and creators. A Pull List gathers new issues from the series, characters and creators you follow as soon as they are available, and an Upcoming Releases section lets you add books to it before they come out.
What Happens To Marvel Unlimited
Current members keep their Marvel Unlimited access free of charge until December 7, and active subscriptions will get an automatic prorated refund for unused time on or around November 16. Once the new app launches, members can bring over their library, reading progress, redeemed comics and saved issues by creating a WEBTOON account. Marvel is asking members to import before December 7 so they can confirm everything moved.
On December 7, Marvel Unlimited stops adding comics and members can no longer read in it. Libraries stay browsable until December 21 so readers can check that the import worked, and the app is removed on December 28. Anyone who subscribed through Apple or Google will need to go through their app store with refund questions, while those who signed up on Marvel.com have until December 31 to contact Marvel Customer Support.
First Look At New York Comic Con
Fans at New York Comic Con, October 8 through 11, can try a beta version of the app at booth #2435 and claim the founding member price on the spot. The first 2,000 people to do so there get a limited-edition Marvel Comics print ID card, one per person while supplies last.
“We know that there is a large audience of readers who are looking to experience comics digitally, and there is no richer library than Marvel Comics,” said David Abdo, general manager of Marvel Comics and Franchise. WEBTOON Entertainment president Yongsoo Kim called the app “a new chapter in helping fans connect with the stories they love.”
