Samuel L. Jackson will not appear as Nick Fury in Avengers: Doomsday, but he says Marvel Studios has already told him he will be back for Avengers: Secret Wars.
Jackson shared the news in an interview with The Direct on the red carpet for The Beast. Asked about Fury’s long absence from the big screen, he answered that his return comes in the movie after this one. When pressed for any hint about the story, Jackson said he had no idea, and that the only thing Marvel had told him was “You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next.”
Out Of Doomsday, Into Secret Wars
The comments settle a question fans have been asking since Marvel’s cast reveal for Doomsday came and went without Jackson’s name on it. Earlier reports had suggested Fury would turn up in the December film anyway, and those reports now look wrong. Director Anthony Russo has said the Doomsday cast has not been fully announced, which kept the door open for surprises, but Jackson has now closed it for himself.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in U.S. theaters on December 18, 2026, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on December 17, 2027, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing both films. That puts Fury’s next live-action appearance a little more than a year away, and it means Jackson will sit out the first half of the two-part Avengers finale entirely.
Where Nick Fury Left Off
Jackson has played Fury since the post-credits scene of Iron Man in 2008, making him one of the longest-serving actors in the MCU. His most recent run came in 2023, when he led the Disney+ series Secret Invasion and then reteamed with Brie Larson in The Marvels. That film ended with Fury back on Earth running the space defense agency S.A.B.E.R., last seen alongside Kamala Khan and her family.
Marvel has said very little about the plot of Secret Wars, and Jackson made clear he knows no more than fans do. Still, the film is widely expected to pull together characters from across the MCU’s history, and Fury has been the one who assembled the team from the very beginning. Having him show up for the final chapter rather than the first one would fit that role.
What It Means For Fans
Anyone hoping to see Fury in theaters this December should adjust expectations. Jackson’s own words rule out a Doomsday appearance, so the wait for the eye patch runs through the end of 2027. Marvel Studios itself has not yet announced the Secret Wars cast, so for now the confirmation comes from the actor himself.
Jackson has never been shy about the MCU. Over the years he has spoken openly about which projects Fury would turn up in, often well before Marvel confirmed them, and that track record is why his word carries weight here. Until the studio makes it official, it is the clearest picture available of where Nick Fury goes next.
