Oscar winner Kris Bowers is scoring Hexed, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ next original feature, Variety reported Monday. Film Music Reporter first reported Friday that Bowers had been scoring the film.
From Documentary Oscar To The Wild Robot
Bowers won his Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards, sharing Best Documentary Short Film with co-director Ben Proudfoot for The Last Repair Shop. His score for DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot picked up nominations at the Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Critics’ Choice Awards, and his credits also include Green Book, King Richard, The Color Purple and the Netflix series Bridgerton.
He’s worked for Disney before, scoring the 2023 Haunted Mansion and Marvel’s Secret Invasion on Disney+.
What Hexed Is About
Hexed follows Billie Doe, an impulsive, offbeat teenager voiced by Hailee Steinfeld. A magical mishap gets Billie expelled from school, and her newfound powers pull her out of the suburbs and into Hexe, a realm of witches. Her cautious mother, Alice, voiced by Rashida Jones, comes along, and the two start digging into family secrets tied to that world. The official trailer revealed that Alice has been keeping her daughter’s magic in check with a purple gem.
Jodie Foster, Walton Goggins, Tracey Ullman and Stephen Fry also star. Fawn Veerasunthorn, who co-directed Wish, and Jason Hand, one of the directors of Moana 2, are directing, with Josie Trinidad as co-director. Roy Conli, a producer on Tangled and Big Hero 6, is producing with Yvett Merino, who produced Encanto.
Disney first announced the film at Destination D23 in August 2025, when Walt Disney Animation chief creative officer Jared Bush revealed the title. First-look footage followed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this April, and Foster and Goggins joined at D23 this August.
When Hexed Opens
Hexed opens in theaters on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, the day before Thanksgiving. Disney has not announced a Disney+ date yet.
