Joe Russo says Ian McKellen’s Magneto is the X-Men character he and his brother Anthony were most excited to bring into Avengers: Doomsday. “It has to be Ian McKellen, Magneto,” Joe Russo told Fandango in an interview posted Tuesday, September 29. “One, that’s one of our favorite characters. Two, it’s Sir Ian McKellen. The fact that we were able to work with him and to see that level of acting up close and personal is spectacular,” he said as reported by Laughing Place.

The directors spoke with Fandango correspondent Chris Tait while promoting Avengers Endgame: Encore, the re-release now in theaters with new scenes that connect to Doomsday.

A Dream Come True For The Russos

Doomsday brings back several actors from the 20th Century Fox X-Men films. “When X-Men came out 25 years ago, we were a lot younger then, and we were fans in movie theaters watching the movies at midnight screenings. So to be able to work with those actors is like a dream come true for us,” Joe Russo said.

Anthony Russo called the reunion “part of the sort of Marvel miracle,” noting that the Avengers and the X-Men were split between different Hollywood studios on film. “We never imagined the day that they could find their way back to one another,” he said. He also called Channing Tatum’s Gambit “a real treat.”

Anthony Russo separately said that more Doomsday casting is still to come. Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18.
