A Glee reboot has moved from wishful thinking to an actual script. Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Tonight that he, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, the show’s three co-creators, have written one, and that about ten members of the original cast are excited about the idea.
What Murphy Said
Murphy spoke to ET on September 23 at FX’s celebration of American Horror Story at the Hotel Chelsea in New York. Asked about Glee, he told ET, “Well, funny you ask, cause I just finished the script an hour ago.”
He explained that he, Falchuk and Brennan, who wrote the first two seasons, had written something together. Murphy said he has been in touch with around ten of the original cast members, who had a lot of questions but were all very enthusiastic.
No one outside the writers has read it yet. “Nobody’s read it, so I don’t know, we’ll see,” Murphy said. He added that he wants to write a couple of scripts to see how people react, particularly the cast, because they were very close while making the show.
At the same event, Murphy told Good Morning America, “Yeah, we just finished writing the ‘Glee’ reboot today.” He said he had been “quietly having conversations with people on that show” about whether to bring it back, adding, “Maybe I shouldn’t, I don’t know. It’s fun just to try.”
Nothing Is Official Yet
No network or streamer is attached, and there is no series order. Glee aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015 and was produced by 20th Century Fox Television, the studio now known as Disney’s 20th Television. The new project is reportedly from 20th Television, but nothing has been announced about where a revival would land.
The original series streams on Hulu.
The Cast Has Been Talking
The comments come less than two weeks after Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry for all six seasons, said on September 11 that she would “follow Ryan wherever he goes.” Back in July, Murphy had also said the show had found a new audience of younger viewers, and wondered whether it was worth revisiting.
Glee followed the misfits of William McKinley High School’s New Directions show choir and their teacher Will Schuester, played by Matthew Morrison. The cast also included Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Jane Lynch and the late Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera. The show won six Primetime Emmys over its run.
