Imagineers at Shanghai Disneyland are pulling a ride vehicle through the park’s new Spider-Man roller coaster at less than half an inch per second, checking clearances along the entire route. In a new bilingual behind-the-scenes video from Walt Disney Imagineering, the team calls push-pull testing on the Shanghai Disneyland Spider-Man coaster one of its most important tests before it can put guests on the ride.

Push-pull testing is underway as Imagineers slowly move a ride vehicle through the attraction.
Walt Disney Imagineering shared the testing on Instagram, and Shanghai Disney Resort posted its own caption: “A high-speed adventure with Spider-Man starts with an ultra-slow test.”
The Opposite Of A Speed Test
In the video, the team calls push-pull testing “exactly the opposite” of a speed test. Crew members pull the vehicle through the entire attraction and check every fraction of an inch along the way to make sure nothing on the track intrudes on the reach envelope, the space around guests in the vehicle that has to stay clear of any obstacle. The vehicle stops again and again, and at every stop the crew measures clearances, checks the positions of equipment and makes adjustments where needed.
The crew uses three reach envelopes rather than one, because the vehicle rolls and leans as it moves through the track. The three envelopes cover multiple positions and angles at points along the ride. Finger-shaped pieces on the envelopes represent the ride’s high-speed clearance zones, and if anything touches one of those fingers, the team stops and takes a closer look.
As the video puts it, “this isn’t something you finish in an afternoon.” With all those stops, the team needed nearly eight hours to travel 49 feet. The clip closes on a nod to the character: “With great power comes great responsibility,” followed by “With great responsibility comes push-pull testing.”
From Finished Track To Moving Vehicles
Ride track installation on the coaster was completed in June, and Shanghai Disney Resort said at D23 in August that the first ride vehicles would soon begin testing.
The coaster is part of what will be the first Disney Parks land dedicated entirely to Spider-Man. At D23, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the land will be built around the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, or W.E.B., an innovation hub where heroes, inventors and engineers create and test new technology.
The coaster also features a giant Spider-Bot, one of the robotic creations built by Peter Parker and his fellow inventors at W.E.B. In July, Disney shared a first look at the massive figure towering over the coaster’s track.
Disney has not announced an opening date for the land or an official name for the coaster.
