Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Featurette Shows Off Stunning Practical Stunt Work

Marvel and Sony dropped a behind-the-scenes featurette for Spider-Man: Brand New Day on May 14, and it gave fans the most substantial look yet at what to expect from the film’s action sequences. Tom Holland described the stunt work as some of the best in any Spider-Man film to date, and the footage backs that up.

The featurette, which Sony is calling “Practical Production,” showcases large-scale practical stunt work filmed on location, including the film’s opening action sequence. That set piece was shot on the streets of Glasgow, Scotland, which doubled for New York City, and featured exploding cars and Spider-Man atop a moving tank. Director Destin Daniel Cretton spoke about his desire to push the physicality of the character further than any previous Spider-Man film, leaning heavily into practical effects and real locations rather than relying solely on digital environments.

A New Approach To Spider-Man Action

One of the most notable aspects of Brand New Day’s production approach is its emphasis on real-world grounding. Previous MCU Spider-Man films, particularly Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home, leaned heavily into CGI-heavy action set pieces. In the featurette, Holland reveals that they shot the most stunts on the day, in camera, of any of his Spider-Man movies, with Cretton adding that putting Spider-Man on real streets with cars exploding lets the audience become part of the experience.

Cretton is no stranger to strong action, having directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which delivered some of the best fight choreography in the entire MCU. That pedigree carries over here, even though much of Brand New Day’s action is street-level stunt work rather than martial arts, save for sequences involving the ninja group known as the Hand.

Two Months Out

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens July 31, 2026. With a second trailer expected imminently and the film just two months away, Marvel and Sony are clearly ramping up the promotional campaign. If the BTS featurette is any indication, the action alone should make this one worth seeing on the biggest screen possible.
