Taika Waititi Says His Star Wars Movie Is “Very Iced”

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is on hold again, and this time he is not hiding it. Asked for an update while promoting his new film, the director told Inverse that the project has been put on ice. Inverse reports he is instead working on a different project with screenwriter Tony McNamara.

“I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together,” Waititi said. When pressed, he checked with his publicist, who answered for him: “If you have to ask, the answer is no.”

“It’s Very Iced”

“I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague,” he said. “It’s very iced,” he added. “I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do.”

According to Inverse, the “different thing” he mentioned is a new collaboration with McNamara, the Oscar-nominated writer behind The Favourite, Cruella and Poor Things. Lucasfilm confirmed in April 2025 that McNamara was writing the Star Wars script. Waititi did not say what the new project is.

The other films on his plate include a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie; We’re Wolves, a follow-up to What We Do in the Shadows; an adaptation of the graphic novel The Incal; and Barn 8, based on a satirical novel.

A Long Road Since 2020

Lucasfilm announced Waititi’s Star Wars film on May 4, 2020, after he directed the Season 1 finale of The Mandalorian and voiced the droid IG-11. Krysty Wilson-Cairns was attached as his co-writer at the time. In the six years since, the movie has never gone into production.

Meanwhile, Jon Watts was recently reported to be directing the first film in a new Skywalker Saga trilogy.

Waititi did not close the door completely, though. “Ice ages do come to an end,” he said. “Who knows?”

What Waititi Has Coming Next

His next release is Klara and the Sun, his adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel for Sony Pictures. Jenna Ortega stars as Klara, a solar-powered robot, alongside Amy Adams, Mia Tharia, Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne. The film opens October 23, 2026.
