Three nyala calves have been born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and Disney says guests may be able to spot them on the savanna soon. For now, the trio is staying backstage with their mothers, bonding with them before heading out onto the resort’s savanna. Disney shared the news with a simple “Three times the cuteness!” and has not given a date for their debut, according to Blog Mickey.
When You Might See Them
The calves are not on public view yet. Backstage time with their moms comes first, and starting out backstage is the usual path for babies at the lodge, where the animal care team has been welcoming newborns since the resort opened more than 25 years ago. Mel, one of the lodge’s animal keepers, said this spring: “Our team knows exactly how to prepare them for life on the savanna.”
Disney has not shared the calves’ names, whether they are male or female, or when exactly they were born.
What To Look For On The Savanna
Nyala calves are easy to pick out once you know what you are looking for. They are born with white stripes and spots, markings that help them disappear into tall grass. As they grow, the males change the most, developing a much darker coat and spiral horns.
If you are staying at the lodge, the savanna viewing areas around Jambo House and Kidani Village are the places to watch once Disney says the calves are out.
A Busy Year For Babies
These three are not the first nyala born at the lodge this year. This spring, Disney introduced a male nyala calf named Parker, and Animal Kingdom has had its own run of new arrivals, including Raisin the Ankole calf earlier this month. Ivy, a Masai giraffe calf, also spent time backstage with her mother, Willow, before making her debut on Kilimanjaro Safaris on June 11.
Guests who are not staying at the lodge can still plan a visit around a meal at Boma or Jiko, both inside Jambo House, which puts the savanna overlooks a short walk away. Either way, watch for word from Disney that the three calves are out, since that is when the sightings start.
