The monorail that loops Tokyo Disney Resort turns 25 today. The Disney Resort Line opened on July 27, 2001, about six weeks before Tokyo DisneySea welcomed its first guests, and Maihama Resort Line Co. is marking the milestone with a limited commemorative pass, a giveaway sticker and a retrospective video.
A Quarter Century Of Mickey-Shaped Windows
The Disney Resort Line is a fully automated straddle-beam monorail running a five kilometer loop with four stations: Resort Gateway Station, Tokyo Disneyland Station, Bayside Station and Tokyo DisneySea Station. It is the piece of infrastructure that made the modern resort possible, connecting the original park to a second gate and the hotel district while freeing up land for further development.
It also differs from its American cousins in ways that surprise first-time visitors. Riders pay a fare rather than boarding for free, and the system is built to Japanese public transportation standards, which makes the trains substantially larger than the monorails at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. The fleet runs five six-car Disney Resort Liners, each carrying roughly 537 guests. The Disney touches are in the details instead: the windows are shaped like Mickey Mouse, and so are the hand straps inside the cars.
The line has been quietly modernized over the years, accepting IC cards such as Suica and Pasmo since 2009 and moving from magnetic stripe tickets to QR codes in 2025.
What Riders Can Get Today
The headline item is a special one-day free pass packaged with an original display mount, limited to 25,000 sets and priced at 1,100 yen for adults. It is sold at Resort Gateway Station and Tokyo DisneySea Station, with purchases handled through the ticket machines and exchanged for the physical set at a designated counter in the same station. Sales run from 11:00 until the last train today, then from first train to last train beginning tomorrow. The pass stays valid through March 31, 2027, and guests are limited to five sets per transaction.
Anyone riding the Disney Resort Line today also receives an original anniversary sticker, available on July 27 only. A retrospective short titled 25th Memorial Movie has been released alongside the celebration, and commemorative souvenir medals have been on sale at both stations since June 26.
Tied Into DisneySea’s Sparkling Jubilee
The anniversary overlaps with Tokyo DisneySea’s own 25th anniversary celebration, and the two are being run together. On July 24 the line debuted its first interactive video presentation, Magic in Motion! Tokyo DisneySea 25th Sparkling Jubilee Liner, inside the ticket gates at Resort Gateway Station. The same day brought a free pass modeled on the Sparkling Jubilee Liner wrap, the first time the operator has built a ticket design around one of its wrapped trains. That pass is available through March 31, 2027 while supplies last.
A charter option rounds out the slate, letting groups book a single Resort Liner car for a private trip around the loop. Tokyo Disney Resort remains one of the more distinctive corners of Disney’s international portfolio, operated under license by the Oriental Land Company rather than by Disney directly, a structure that also shapes how Disney earns from its overseas parks.
