The Tomorrowland reimagining is official. Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum announced in the closing moments of Saturday’s Horizons: A Carousel of Progress showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event that Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park will be rebuilt, bringing multiple new attractions and new open spaces to the land, grounded in Walt Disney’s original vision of an optimistic future.
Next In Line After Coco And Avengers Campus
Tomorrowland will be the next major Disneyland Resort project once the Coco attraction and the Avengers Campus expansion are complete. That sequencing puts the land ahead of the previously announced Avatar experience at Disney California Adventure in the resort’s construction queue, a meaningful reshuffle for anyone tracking where the money goes next in Anaheim, and Disney is pushing Avatar’s planned opening back to make room for it.
Mazloum tied the announcement to Disneyland’s approaching 75th anniversary, telling the crowd it is time to renew Walt’s original promise for the park, with that next chapter beginning in Tomorrowland. Disney says the transformation will honor the legacy of the original land while reimagining its future, preserving what guests cherish most while introducing new experiences and possibilities for the next generation of fans.
Walt’s Opening Day Speech Is The Blueprint
Imagineers briefed press on the creative direction before the public reveal. Portfolio Executive Creative Producer Emo O’Brien said the team looked back to the speech Walt Disney gave on opening day in 1955, drawing on his description of Tomorrowland as a vista into wondrous worlds. Disney has not formalized specific plans, and no individual attractions, timeline or opening window were announced Saturday night, so the fate of current tenants like Space Mountain, Star Tours and the Astro Orbitor is an open question for a later date.
The First Full Overhaul Since 1998
Tomorrowland opened with the park on July 17, 1955, and its last significant overhaul came with the New Tomorrowland of 1998, a redo that fans have debated ever since. The land has seen individual projects in the years between, but a full reimagining has sat at or near the top of fan wish lists at nearly every D23 since the convention began, and the Honda Center crowd of thousands reacted accordingly. It also caps a stretch of visible Imagineering attention at the original park, from major refurbishments to the groundbreaking new animatronic that arrived with the Pirates Of The Caribbean reopening.
With planning in its earliest stages, the open questions now are which Tomorrowland attractions survive the transformation, what fills the new open spaces, and how construction gets staged in a land hemmed in on every side by the rest of the park. Disney says more details will come as the project develops.
