X-Men ’97 is not slowing down. Voice recording for Season 3 is now officially underway, with Rogue voice actor Lenore Zann confirming she has returned to the studio to start laying down lines. And Marvel Animation head Brad Winderbaum has gone even further, revealing that discussions about Seasons 4 and 5 are already happening.
Winderbaum teased the show’s multi-season future at the Tribeca Festival, where the Season 2 world premiere took place on June 13. As Comic Basics reported, he appeared alongside executive producers Eric Lewald, Julia Lewald, and Larry Houston, and Marvel Studios itself promoted the tease of two more seasons following the event. Winderbaum first revealed the scope of those plans at New York Comic Con, telling Collider “There is definitely, more than possibly, more to come from X-Men ’97. We’re talking about Seasons 4 and 5 now,” and adding that he had already seen animatics covering nearly all of Season 3, calling what he had seen incredible. The original creative team of Eric Lewald, Julia Lewald, and Larry Houston, who consulted on Season 1, have now stepped up to full executive producer roles for Season 2 and beyond, bringing decades of institutional knowledge back to the franchise.
Season 2 Arrives July 1 on Disney+
Before any of that, fans have Season 2 to look forward to. The nine-episode second season premieres on Disney+ on July 1, 2026, and picks up with the X-Men scattered across time from Ancient Egypt to the far future, racing to return to the 1990s and stop Apocalypse. The season has been in production since before Season 1 even aired, and features the return of the full cast alongside new additions.
Matthew Chauncey serves as head writer and showrunner for Season 2 after replacing the fired Beau DeMayo. Winderbaum has been consistent in saying the creative core of the show, its directors, writers, producers, and cast, remained largely intact through that transition, and early reactions from the Tribeca premiere suggest the second season lives up to the first.
A Potential Five-Season Run
The original X-Men: The Animated Series ran for five seasons in the 1990s before going off the air. With Seasons 4 and 5 now in active discussion, X-Men ’97 is on track to mirror that legacy exactly, picking up where the original left off and running for the same number of seasons. Winderbaum has said future seasons will be released annually, meaning fans may not face the long gaps between installments that have plagued other Marvel Disney+ shows.
Season 1 of X-Men ’97 debuted in March 2024 and received overwhelming critical acclaim, earning a 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and recording 4 million views globally in its first five days on Disney+.
