Monsters, Inc. Coaster Frame Now Rises Above The Trees At Hollywood Studios

Concept art of Sulley greeting guests on a brick street in Monstropolis at Disney's Hollywood Studios

The Monsters, Inc. coaster frame is now tall enough to see above the tree line at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Construction photographer bioreconstruct photographed the steel on Sunday, October 25, and paired it with an aerial of the same spot taken two days earlier.

The curved beams in the middle of that shot are the loading area. From there, bioreconstruct says, trains will rise flat and fast up to the ceiling of the structure and then launch into the ride’s first scene. That lines up with the vertical lift Disney showed in the preview above. Big red crawler cranes are still on site beside the steel in both the ground shot and the aerial.

Mapping The Ride From The Parking Lot

A second set, taken from guest parking, numbers three spots on the frame. The lowest supports hold track for the doors riders pass through as they enter the unload area. Above that are supports for a stretch of ride path that runs through the floor over unload, and the highest supports carry track from early in the ride.

His aerials from a few days earlier caught Monsters, Inc. coaster track sections staged for placement next to the building. The new ground-level shots show just how high the structure stands now.

Monstropolis Is Getting Its Facades

The street-level buildings are coming along too. A painted sign in red and yellow is starting to show on one brick wall, though its lettering isn’t readable yet. Nearby facades now have arched windows trimmed in cream, with several of the openings still covered. Dark riveted columns split the brick into bays, and a band of pale zigzag trim runs along the top of the wall.

Over at Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the land’s pizza spot named for Fear Tech’s six-legged mascot, cornices appear to be staged against an exterior wall of the restaurant’s outdoor second-level seating. Wall theming continues from there toward the entrance. Disney has pitched Archie’s as the go-to place for a slice in the land, with the Monsters University Alumni Club right next door for guests eating there.

When Guests Get In

Parts of Monstropolis will open to guests in 2027 while work continues on the door coaster, Disney announced on the Disney Parks Blog. There’s still no opening date for the coaster itself. Randy Newman’s new song “Welcome to Monstropolis” will debut when the land opens, and a Glob Theater show of the same name will be hosted by Mike and Sulley. Until then, the best views are from the parking lot and from the air.
