Spider-Man: Brand New Day Scored 91 Percent With Critics, Then Audiences Gave It A Record-Tying 98

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is Certified Fresh at 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its Friday release. That is a strong number on its own. Against the rest of the franchise, it is unremarkable. The film’s first audience score is another matter entirely.

Eight of the eleven Spider-Man movies sit above 90 percent, which is a striking record for a series that has been rebooted twice and handed to three different lead actors.

Every Spider-Man Movie By Critic Score

  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – 97 percent
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – 95 percent
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home – 93 percent
  • Spider-Man 2 – 93 percent
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming – 92 percent
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home – 91 percent
  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day – 91 percent
  • Spider-Man – 90 percent
  • The Amazing Spider-Man – 71 percent
  • Spider-Man 3 – 62 percent
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – 50 percent

Figures are current as of publication and taken from Forbes’ full ranking. Brand New Day’s number has already moved once, opening at 93 percent on a small sample before settling.

Where Brand New Day Lands

At 91 percent, Brand New Day ties Far From Home for sixth place. That also makes it the joint lowest scoring film of Tom Holland’s four, level with Far From Home and behind Homecoming at 92 and No Way Home at 93. All four sit within two points of each other, so the ranking says more about how consistent the run has been than about any drop in quality.

The top two spots belong to the animated films. Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse are the only Spider-Man movies above 95 percent, and no live-action entry has ever beaten them.

The bottom of the table is the Andrew Garfield era and the end of the Raimi trilogy. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the only Spider-Man film with a rotten score, at 50 percent, with Spider-Man 3 just above it at 62.

A Record-Tying Audience Debut

With the first preview screenings underway, Brand New Day’s Popcornmeter score has debuted at 98 percent. That ties Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for the highest audience score of any Marvel Cinematic Universe film, sits one point above No Way Home’s 97, and makes it the highest audience-rated Spider-Man movie so far, per Forbes. There is a symmetry to the tie: Shang-Chi is also director Destin Daniel Cretton’s previous Marvel film.

The usual caveat applies. The number is built on early verified ratings from the film’s first shows, and it will move as the wide release brings in a much larger pool over the weekend, the same way the critic score shifted across its first day.

Brand New Day opens July 31 in the United States and reached United Kingdom cinemas on Wednesday. Destin Daniel Cretton directed from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, with Tom Holland returning alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo and Sadie Sink. Earlier this year a featurette showed off how much of the stunt work was shot practically in London.
