Disney+ has greenlit an all-new animated Darkwing Duck series, with Mark Hamill voicing Drake Mallard and his crime-fighting alter ego. Seth Rogen co-stars as Launchpad McQuack and produces through Point Grey Pictures, while Lizzy Caplan voices Gosalyn Mallard and Lilimar joins as a new character named Duckie.
The show is a continuation of the original 1991 series, picking the story up 35 years later. According to the official logline, Darkwing has spent that time trapped in an alternate world that has never heard of his superhero exploits. Duckie, a rebellious teen who knows all about his past, shows up to pull him back into action. Together they take on old enemies Negaduck and Megavolt and reunite with Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana to save the universe.
Disney also released a first look at the redesigned hero, who keeps his signature hat, mask and cape and now wears a belt.
The Full Voice Cast
Beyond the four leads, Dan Stevens voices Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis plays Rosa, and Kathryn Newton takes the role of Firecracker. Teo Briones joins as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, and Katie Rich and Nat Faxon round out the cast as Officers Shanks and Webb.
Hamill takes over the role from Jim Cummings, who voiced Darkwing in the original series. Cummings said in August that Disney was recasting the hero and Launchpad, and today’s announcement confirms both.
Six Years In The Making
A new Darkwing Duck was first reported in development in 2020 from the same team, Disney Branded Television and Point Grey Pictures.
“Disney said ‘Let’s get dangerous’ and we said ‘hell yeah,'” the Point Grey team said in a statement.
Original series creator Tad Stones consulted on the development of the new show. “Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series,” Stones said. “The new creative team has certainly amped up the action and comedy without forgetting the Disney heart.”
Disney has not announced a premiere date. The original Darkwing Duck ran for 91 episodes and is streaming now on Disney+.
