Prime Video is closing in on an order for a Clone Saga series set in Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters, according to sources. The project would draw on the second Clone Saga arc from Marvel Comics, the one built around Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker, two clones of Spider-Man.
Kelvin Yu, who created the Disney+ series American Born Chinese, wrote the show. Amy Pascal, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who run the Universe of Marvel Characters for Sony Pictures Television and were executive producers on Spider-Noir, are expected to executive produce with Yu. Representatives for Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television declined to comment.
Following Spider-Noir At Prime Video
The Clone Saga show would take the place of Spider-Noir, which Prime Video canceled after one season on September 4. At the time, Amazon and Sony Pictures Television were said to have one project nearing a series order, with its concept kept under wraps.
Spider-Noir already had a Ben Reilly at its center. Nicolas Cage played him as a private investigator in 1930s New York City whose secret identity was the title hero. Marvel’s comics give the Spider-Man Noir mantle to Peter Parker, but rights restrictions led the series to swap in Ben Reilly.
Both shows come out of the same multi-title agreement between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, which covers a slate of series drawn from Sony’s Marvel characters, most tied to Spider-Man. As with Spider-Noir, the Clone Saga series would premiere on MGM+ first and then stream on Prime Video.
Who Ben Reilly And Kaine Parker Are
In Marvel Comics, Ben Reilly is the stable clone. He took his first name from Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben and his last name from Aunt May’s maiden name, and he went on to become a superhero in his own right as the Scarlet Spider. Kaine Parker is Spider-Man’s first, flawed clone.
The storyline’s twist that is considered its most controversial revealed Ben Reilly as the real Spider-Man and Peter Parker as the clone. Fans pushed back, and Marvel eventually undid the switch, restoring Peter Parker as the original.
How The Series Could Differ From The Comics
The comics are the starting point, but sources caution that the adaptation could depart from them in major ways. Accounts of the plot conflict. One version has Ben and Kaine learning they are clones and then confronting other clones. Another has the series changing how the two became clones, with both possibly taking on new identities.
