Prime Video has canceled Spider-Noir after a single season, ending the Nicolas Cage series one day before the Creative Arts Emmy Awards begin deciding the eleven categories it is nominated in.
The decision does not mean Amazon is backing away from Sony’s Marvel characters. The multi-title agreement between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television that produced the show is carrying on, with several projects still in development and one of them said to be close to a series order. Spider-Noir was the second series ordered under that deal and the first to actually reach the screen, after the Cindy Moon spinoff Silk was scrapped in 2024.
The Numbers Behind The Call
Spider-Noir was not a flop. It opened at No. 2 on Nielsen’s U.S. top ten for original series in its first week with 851 million minutes viewed, and pulled 2.6 billion viewing minutes in the United States across its first six weeks.
What it lacked was the staying power of other recent Prime Video releases such as Off Campus, Reacher and Ride Or Die, falling out of the platform’s daily top ten relatively quickly, and it carried an unusually heavy price tag. The production filmed both a color version and a black and white version, released as Authentic Black and White and True-Hue Full Color so subscribers could pick how to watch. Streaming renewals turn on cost against performance, and that ratio likely decided it.
Critics And Emmy Voters Both Turned Up
The reception is what makes the timing so strange. Spider-Noir holds a 92 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes across 112 reviews, with a Certified Fresh label and a 90 percent audience score. Its eleven Emmy nominations were the most of any Prime Video series this year and tied it with Saturday Night Live for the seventh-highest total of the season, putting it ahead of best series contenders including The Bear and Slow Horses.
All eleven landed in craft categories: production design, cinematography, title design, prosthetic makeup, original score, original music and lyrics, sound editing, sound mixing, visual effects, stunt coordination and stunt performance. Cage himself was not nominated. Every one of those races is settled at the Creative Arts ceremonies on September 5 and 6, ahead of the main telecast on September 14.
Where That Leaves Ben Reilly
Season one told a largely complete story and leaves only a few loose threads, so the cancellation does not strand fans. Cage said after the finale that “all of us achieved what we set out to do” and that the season works on its own, and he had already said in June that he did not know whether the show would return. Co-showrunner Oren Uziel had floated pushing Ben Reilly toward the Second World War if a second season happened. Cage is expected to voice the animated version of the character again in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2027.
Update, September 7: Cage has now responded to the cancellation directly. “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man,” he said in a statement to Deadline on Sunday, adding, “Onwards, upwards, inwards.” The Emmy voters answered too. Spider-Noir won five of its eleven categories across the two Creative Arts nights, for cinematography, sound editing, special visual effects, stunt coordination and main title design.
Spider-Noir premiered May 25 on MGM+’s linear channel and dropped all eight episodes globally on Prime Video on May 27, in more than 240 countries and territories. Cage starred as Ben Reilly opposite Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, Karen Rodriguez as Janet, Brendan Gleeson as Silvermane, Jack Huston as Flint Marko and Abraham Popoola as Lonnie Lincoln. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot served as co-showrunners and executive producers, developing the series with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal. Lord and Miller executive produced through their Lord Miller banner alongside Aditya Sood and Dan Shear, Pascal through Pascal Pictures, and Cage and Pavlina Hatoupis also executive produced. Harry Bradbeer directed and executive produced the first two episodes. The series was produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
