9-1-1 Season 10 Trailer Turns Los Angeles Into LA-VA Land Before The October 15 Premiere

9-1-1 Season 10 key art showing lava flowing through Los Angeles streets in the shape of the 9-1-1 logo beneath a volcano, with the words Welcome To LA-VA Land

Los Angeles gets a volcano in the 9-1-1 Season 10 trailer, which ABC released on Oct. 1. The show comes back on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. ET for its 10th season, its fourth since moving from Fox to ABC. Last season the disaster drama sent two of its first responders to outer space. This time the trouble starts underground, and the lava follows.

A Sinkhole First, Then A Volcano

ABC is selling the season with the line “LA-LA Land doesn’t have a protocol for LA-VA Land,” and its new key art shows lava running through the city’s streets in the shape of the show’s logo. Fans got a first hint in September, when a short teaser featured a caller telling dispatch, “I’m trapped in a river of lava.”

“Funnily enough, it opens with a giant sinkhole,” showrunner Tim Minear told TVLine. “And while we were prepping that, a giant sinkhole opened up on Sunset Boulevard. It’s not my fault!” The sinkhole, he said, “then turns into, of course, a volcano.” He summed up the season as “volcanoes, sinkholes, fatherhood, love, death, humor, laughter, and lots and lots of food.”

Where The 118 Picks Up

Season 9 sent several characters in new directions. Angela Bassett’s Athena Grant is now a detective. Oliver Stark’s Buck has become the legal guardian of Theo, the boy he helped his friends Connor and Kameron conceive as a sperm donor, after the couple died in a car crash. Kenneth Choi’s Chimney is still running the 118, the job he took over after Bobby Nash’s death in Season 8. Athena’s children are on new paths, too: Harry is a firefighter and May is going into nursing.

Minear said the writers spent last season setting that up on purpose. “Athena’s going to be a detective, Buck’s trying to be a dad, May is starting her new career in the medical field, and Harry’s a firefighter now,” he said. “It’s the same show, but hopefully not a hamster wheel of a show.”

The core cast is back: Bassett, Stark, Choi, Aisha Hinds as Hen, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie and Ryan Guzman as Eddie, along with Corinne Massiah as May, Elijah M. Cooper as Harry and Gavin McHugh as Christopher.
