Coven Academy’s first chapter is now free to watch on YouTube, so anyone curious about Tim Federle’s new witch drama can sample the opening without a Disney+ or Hulu subscription. Disney posted Chapter 1 on the official Disney+ YouTube channel, and the rest of the first season is now streaming on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform On Demand.
The series premiered Thursday, October 1, on Freeform, and as we noted when the full trailer set up a love triangle between Briar, Jake and Ollie, streaming was always set to follow a day later.
Where To Watch The Rest
If the free chapter hooks you, there is no weekly wait on streaming. The whole season landed at once on Friday, October 2, so you can keep going straight from Chapter 1 to the finale.
Cable viewers can follow along on Freeform, where the show opened the network’s 31 Nights of Halloween. Freeform airs Coven Academy again Saturday, October 3, at 9:35 a.m. Eastern and Pacific. New episodes air Thursday, October 8, at 9 p.m., and the season finale follows Thursday, October 15, at 9 p.m., with a midnight encore after each of those Thursday nights.
What Coven Academy Is About (Spoilers Ahead)
The series opens when Briar, a sharp, sarcastic New Yorker played by Malina Weissman, arrives in New Orleans with questions about her mother’s death. Head of school Miss Graves, played by Tiffani Thiessen, promises answers in time. First, she tells Briar to form a coven with two new classmates, Sasha (Jordan Leftwich) and Tegan (Ora Duplass).
Briar shows up guarded, and the three girls have to learn to trust each other while each hides secrets from the others. Malachi Barton plays Jake, a confident student who is already strong at magic, and Louis Thresher plays Ollie, a newly turned vampire. Devon Sawa guest stars as Mr. Cole, the teacher charged with keeping the school’s young warlocks in line.
Federle, who created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series for Disney+, produces Coven Academy through his Chorus Boy Productions with Disney Kids and Family. He calls the show “a tribute to Charmed, Dawson’s Creek, and The Vampire Diaries.”
The format is built for bingeing. Freeform airs the season as 10 episodes, but on Disney+ and Hulu it is split into 21 shorter chapters. “They are shorter chapters, but if you binge it, it’s like five-plus hours,” Federle said. “At no point when we were breaking these stories were we like, ‘How do we do this in 15 minutes?'”
